Our Watermelon Solidarity Earrings are a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian peoples and collective liberation - from Palestine to the Philippines.
These earrings were designed and handcrafted by Indigenous Tboli artisans of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato in the Philippines. The Tboli are celebrated as visionary craftspeople that work with brass, wood, textiles and Temool Lemimet (Tboli beading).
🍉 What do watermelons have to do with Palestine? 🍉
The watermelon has long stood as a powerful emblem of resistance, deeply intertwined with the struggle for freedom in Palestine. In the face of intense oppression, the Palestinian flag endured a three-decade ban by Israel in Gaza and the West Bank, from 1967 to 1993. Even the depiction of its colors—red, green, black, and white—was prohibited, yet Palestinian resilience persisted.
Despite the state's attempts to silence their voice, Palestinian resistance remained unyielding. In defiance of this suppression, the locally grown watermelon emerged as a potent symbol that sparks a movement of defiance.
We acknowledge that Indigenous Peoples in the Philippines continue to fight for their rights and resist state violence and oppression from the Philippines government. We hope that when you wear these pieces, you will remember that none of us are free, until all of us are free.
As our partner Sesotunawa has said, "these creations symbolize our collective fight against displacement, cultural erasure, and the pursuit of self-determination."
